History To Go began in 2004 and has since grown to offer as many as five, customized events per year. We’ve explored residential and commercial areas all over the Valley and beyond, sharing historical information such as architectural details and historical neighborhood development, little-known stories of significant people and events, and environmental evolutions that shaped where we live. Having outside experts and knowledgeable MVHS staff giving insights and answering questions outside the walls of our sites provides a special enjoyment to all who participate.
The History To Go Event Series 2020 will be primarily held as virtual experiences. MVHS will debut pre-recorded videos on the designated days and start times. You’ll be able to revisit each event at your convenience on our YouTube channel at https://bit.ly/mvhs-history-to-go.
The Amazing History Race: Mahoning Valley will still follow our “road race-scavenger hunt” format but will be conducted from the safety and security of your own vehicle. Check out more details below.
Finally, due to crowd restrictions from Oak Hill Cemetery, MVHS will present our annual historical tour in the online video format. Click on the Details button below to get more information.
No admission fees will be charged for the History To Go Event Series 2020. However, we hope that you’ll support the extra production for these events due to the pandemic by making a donation through the “Support This Event” button provided in any of the listings below.

Founders Day: Good Humor Tour
Thursday, September 10, 2020
A virtual tour celebrates the centennial of the invention of the Good Humor Bar. Youngstown resident, Harry Burt, will be showcased at Tyler History Center, where Burt operated his iconic ice cream and candy-making operation. Other downtown sites associated with Harry Burt will also be featured.
Bites and Bits of History: Strolling Through Oak Hill Cemetery
Thursday, October 22, 2020
NO in-person, guided tours at the cemetery this year.
Our most popular walking tour will be transformed into a dynamic online video presentation, including more archival photos and documents about those interred, as well as, architectural and cultural traditions from the 19th and 20th Centuries. MVHS is proud to showcase intriguing historical stories as an alternative to the “thrill and scare” experiences usually associated with Halloween activities.
You don’t have to register for this online event. Just visit our MVHS YouTube channel at https://bit.ly/mvhs-hands-on-history on Saturday, October 24 at noon or anytime after its debut.
This annual event series, as well as our popular Cookie Table and Cocktails fundraiser in February, are made possible with the dedicated volunteers of our History To Go Team. It is comprised of individuals who enjoy engaging with the community, increasing general awareness of MVHS, and promoting a deeper understanding of our local history. If you’d like to be a part of this group, find out how you can make a difference by volunteering with your own talents and perspectives.
