Our Historical Society celebrated its 140th year of collecting, preserving and teaching about the heritage of our region at our annual Founders Day inner on September 15, 2015. It was a noteworthy celebration as we held a ribbon-cutting for the new location of the Business and Media Archives of the Mahoning Valley in the Carriage House. The members, Board of Directors, and staff have much to be proud of with our success in developing first-rate educational programs, a huge and diverse collection of artifacts and archives, and nationally accredited museum facilities.
Last November, we opened the basement and first floor of the Tyler History Center to the public with the relocated MVHS Archival Library and the newly-named Drs. Thomas & Maria Fok Exhibit Gallery! These programs will add to our already busy schedule of special events and educational activities in this magnificent facility in downtown Youngstown. As we grow, we want you to be part of the excitement!
Meanwhile, the Board of Directors and staff are working very hard to continue to increase revenue through museum visitors, research services, facility rentals, and merchandise sales. As always, MVHS benefits greatly from annual support from our members and the community.
This year, as part of our year-end appeal, we are joining the #GivingTuesday effort. What is Giving Tuesday? Founded in 2012, it’s a global day dedicated to giving back. On Tuesday, December 1 — after Black Friday and Cyber Monday start the holiday shopping season — non-profit organizations all over the world hope people take this day to think about philanthropy.
Thank you for your commitment to celebrate the history of the people of the Mahoning Valley. Best wishes for the holidays and New Year!
